Shooting Red Apples
A rediscovered shoot done for McMann & Tate in 1964. The advertising campaign for Red Apple cigarettes featured four female protagonists created by the agency, Cowboy Girl, Future Girl, Vampire Girl, and Girl on the Run.
The campaign ignited a firestorm of controversy, with one major newscaster declaring, “Girls can’t be boys, cowboy or not. And where’s this women’s husband anyway!”
Magazines refused to run the ads. The campaign destroyed both McMann and Tate, as well as Red Apples cigarettes, which are all but forgotten today.
